The electric pickup revolution is well underway, and Nissan doesn’t seem content to sit on the sidelines for much longer. After years of watching rivals roll out electrified trucks, Nissan is now considering something that could add a refreshing twist to the mix: a lightweight, all-electric pickup that’s built for adventure. And judging by the early hints, it might just arrive before 2030.
While nothing is set in stone yet, Nissan is exploring the idea of a compact, unibody electric pickup designed for buyers who want both a truck bed and a smaller carbon footprint. Think of it as the perfect eco-friendly companion for hauling camping gear, mountain bikes, or snowboards. If you’re trying to picture it, Nissan’s futuristic Surf-Out Concept from 2021 offers a glimpse of the vibe they could be aiming for: sleek, adventurous, and ready to hit the beach or the mountains.
Besides the Surf-Out being a concept, Nissan’s recent moves, such as revealing new electric models and updating its battery technology, suggest the company is serious about reclaiming its spot as an EV innovator. The model would offer the ride comfort of a five-seat passenger vehicle with the utility of a light-payload truck. But as exciting as it sounds, Nissan hasn’t officially greenlit the project yet. Like any automaker, they need to be sure there’s enough demand and that they can price it attractively enough before pulling the trigger on production.
This exploration comes at a pivotal time for Nissan, which is busy plotting a major EV comeback. After pioneering the space with the Leaf years ago, Nissan is ready to get serious again. A big part of that plan involves a brand-new EV platform designed to support a much broader lineup, including sedans, crossovers, and yes, potentially even a lightweight pickup.
What’s different this time? For starters, the new platform will feature lower-cost lithium-ion batteries, which will help Nissan maintain competitive pricing. It’s separate from the company’s solid-state battery plans, which are still on track for a 2028 rollout. However, Nissan promises that the current lithium-ion setup will offer faster charging and better efficiency than what’s available on the market today. Production will take place at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi, facility, giving the brand’s U.S. operations a big boost in the EV era.

Meanwhile, Nissan has already dipped its toe into electrified pickups with the debut of the Frontier Pro Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. Developed in partnership with Dongfeng and built in China, the Frontier Pro pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. Production is expected to begin later in 2025 in China, although Nissan is staying quiet about whether it will be made available in other markets.
Currently, Nissan’s fully electric lineup consists of just two models: the aging Leaf and the sleek, Japan-built Ariya crossover. Clearly, there’s plenty of room for growth, and a compact electric pickup would be a bold way to expand the portfolio and win over a new generation of eco-conscious truck lovers.
For now, it’s a waiting game. Nissan has promised to share more details about its new electric vehicle (EV) platform soon, so stay tuned.
