How Nissan Safety Shield helps driver’s

Today, new vehicles offer a wide range of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) with various functions. Nissan Safety Shield is no exception as this terminology describes a collection of intelligent technology features that monitors the driver, vehicle behaviour and road conditions. The Nissan Safety Shield have three main functions: monitor, respond and protect where each function has its own set of technologies.

What Does Nissan Safety Shield Include?

The first reference to Nissan Safety Shield came in 2011 which only involved blind-spot warning. In 2013, Nissan added lane departure warning and moving object detection but more features followed quite quickly. They introduced Safety Shield 360 in 2019 which included the first six key components or features listed below that can sense dangerous situations around the vehicle.

  • Blind-spot warning detects a vehicle in the blind spot and gives drivers a visual and audible warning
  • Rear cross-traffic warning alerts the driver if a vehicle is approaching from the side whilst they are reversing out of the driveway or parking spaces
  • Lane departure warning notifies a driver with an audible sound or sensory feedback when they are drifting from the lane. This is usually in the form of steering wheel vibration
  • Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking provides visual and audible warnings when a potential collision may occur. If the driver takes no action, it will automatically brake the vehicle to prevent or minimise the severity of a forward collision
  • Rear automatic braking applies the brakes if it detects a stationary object behind the vehicle while reversing
  • Automatic high-beam headlights switch back and forth seamlessly between low- and high beams depending on traffic conditions

Benefits of Nissan Safety Shield

The six features of Nissan Safety Shield are different from passive safety features like seat belts and airbags designed to reduce injuries once an accident has already occurred. Combining Nissan Safety Shield 360, Nissan Intelligent Mobility and Zone Body Construction provides drivers with much-improved safety. While nothing can predict an accident, these technologies help minimise the risks and consequences. Some of the key benefits of Nissan Safety Shield include the following:

  • Identify potential risks in advance
  • Reduce driver stress
  • Improve driver comfort
  • Minimise the risk of accidents
  • Improve your vehicle fleet’s driver security

Passive Features And Zone Body Construction

In addition to Nissan Safety Shield, Nissan has many other advanced technologies with several passive features and Zone Body Construction. This includes Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) that helps you stay in control by preventing wheels from locking enabling you to steer through obstacles ahead.

Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) is another feature that helps maintain traction in slippery conditions while Zone Body Construction absorbs impact when a crash is unavoidable and the advanced airbag system provides protection for all occupants.

Nissan continues to develop next-generation technologies as the automaker is dedicated to the safety of you and your passengers. For that reason, you will find several innovative safety features on new Nissan models. Better yet, in the coming years, nearly all Nissan cars, SUVs and bakkies could offer Nissan Safety Shield 360.

Disclaimer

All systems explained in this article, regardless of manufacturer, rely on sensors that may not work under certain conditions, including bad weather. As such, they should not be considered 100% reliable and drivers must be aware and vigilant at all times.

Nissan Safety Shield does not offer hands-free, self-driving or semi-autonomous capabilities and should not be confused with Nissan’s ProPilot Assist system. Even with this technology, your hands must always be on the steering wheel.
