Nissan GT-R – A Design Classic

Nissan GT-R – A Design Classic

It’s almost a shame that the Nissan GT-R’s design hasn’t had much hype. While the GT-R might not have the advantage of 50 years’ of aesthetic tweaking or a timeless style to rival the likes of, say, Aston Martin, it certainly has a formidable heritage. A heritage rooted predominantly in motorsport and video games.

What Nissan has done is take both the video games and motorsport heritage and integrate both elements into an unmistakably attractive style. Sure, a GT-R might just be a gamer’s imagination brought to life, but by far its strongest visual signature is the stunning rear view. Those circular lights glow just like afterburners and there’s no mistaking the almost cartoon-like exhausts. It’s just those kinds of images we grew up with on our pixelated PlayStation games.

Exterior Design

Naturally the GT-R sports its unique Japanese design with a somewhat muscular exterior. It’s edgy, wide shouldered, and chunky and low to the ground complete with flat sides. This Nissan has also been reported as one of the most aerodynamic vehicles the world over.

It is, however, functionality that makes up the core of this model. And it is that functionality that is reflected in the car’s design. Nissan has steered away from an elegant shape and veered towards an almost animated robot. Obvious functional elements include the rear pillar’s kink to help airflow and the side front fender which scoops to improve aerodynamics.

Interior Design

The interior of the GT-R is ultra-stylish and highly functional. It’s a unique cabin with large, clear instruments that are easy to use and can be found right in front of the driver. The tachometer takes pride of place and there is an easy-to-see gearshift display.

Even more unique is the multi-function display right in the centre of the dashboard that offers a detailed log of the driver’s behaviour such as fuel economy, speed and g-force while also giving details about the car’s mechanical information, including water and oil pressure as well as turbo boost and gearshift mapping to help you save fuel.

The centre console that stretches along the middle of the cabin has a red start button along with a parking brake and leather shift lever. Magnesium paddles can be found just behind the steering wheel.

While the steering wheel is somewhat compact, it’s comfy to grip and has been trimmed in soft leather.
The seats of the GT-R have been specifically designed for the vehicle. They have heavy side bolsters for the utmost lateral support and comfort.

Overall the interior of this model is roomy, light and airy and a lot more practical than other cars in the same performance bracket.

Final Word

The Nissan GT-R is all about constant evolution and there have been rumours of future developments. But it is the design of the GT-R that needs to be celebrated right now.
