At Group1 Nissan, we are always excited to share the latest innovations in the world of electric vehicles, especially when they contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

Today, we have some exciting news to share – Nissan is taking a groundbreaking step towards environmental sustainability by repurposing batteries from old LEAF electric vehicles to create portable power stations. This initiative not only demonstrates Nissan’s commitment to the environment but also offers a practical solution to electricity challenges the world over.

The Power of Repurposing

As electric vehicles gain popularity around the world, it’s essential to consider the environmental impact of their batteries. Like the batteries in our smartphones, EV batteries also degrade over time, leading to reduced capacity and voltage. However, what’s remarkable is that most LEAF owners stop driving their cars before the batteries become unusable. This means that many of the individual cells still retain their functionality when the vehicles are discarded.

Moreover, the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, common in both EVs and smartphones, carries a significant carbon footprint. By repurposing these batteries, Nissan not only extends their lifespan but also contributes to a reduction in their overall environmental impact. It’s a win-win situation for both Nissan and our planet.

The Birth of Nissan’s Portable Power Stations

Nissan’s innovative approach to battery repurposing involves disassembling old LEAF battery packs to refurbish the working modules. The result? The Nissan portable power station is a game-changer in the world of sustainable energy storage.

This remarkable device, developed in collaboration with JVCKenwood Corp. and 4R Energy Corp, contains two LEAF battery modules, each retaining approximately 80% of their original capacity. Although no longer suitable for powering electric vehicles, these modules still have plenty of life left in them to charge your phone, tablet, or other devices.

Accessible Green Energy

What’s even more exciting is that these Nissan portable power stations are now available for purchase in Japan at an affordable price of 170,500 yen (about R22 000). This might seem like a significant investment, but it’s a small price to pay for a high-capacity battery pack.

To put it into perspective, each of Nissan’s current-gen battery modules is equivalent to 112 Ah (112,000 mAh), assuming a 20% loss in capacity. With two of these modules, you can charge your iPhone more than 40 times! Imagine the convenience and peace of mind this could bring, especially in areas with unreliable power sources.

Looking Ahead

While this innovative initiative is currently available in Japan, it’s not difficult to imagine its potential impact worldwide. As South Africa continues to explore the benefits of electric vehicles, such sustainable solutions will play a crucial role in our journey towards a greener future. Nissan’s forward-thinking approach to reusing batteries is a testament to its dedication to environmental responsibility.

As a pioneer in the electric vehicle industry, Nissan has been selling the LEAF since 2010, giving it a head start over many other automakers. The LEAF may be cheaper and have less range than some competitors, but it’s still a powerhouse of energy. With battery capacities ranging from 40 to 62 kWh in the latest models, there’s a wealth of potentially recyclable batteries at our disposal.

In conclusion, Nissan’s innovative step in repurposing old LEAF batteries into portable power stations is a testament to the company’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable future. As electric vehicles gain traction in South Africa, solutions like these will become increasingly valuable in addressing our energy challenges.
