Starting a family often requires a few subtle changes – a safety net for the pool, power socket protectors, a child-safe gate at the top and bottom of the stairs and of course a family car that’s spacious, safe and above all practical. Luckily there are quite a few vehicles fitting the bill and the Nissan Livina is one all-rounder that won’t blow your budget. Five years after its SA launch it still enjoys consistent sales figures and smiles from satisfied customers. And if you look at what you get at the price, you’d hurriedly add it to your list of best buy options.
Nissan Livina model choices
The Nissan Livina range boasts something for everyone, clearly defying the preconceived idea that a family car has to fit a certain mould. It comprises of a standard Livina, more spacious Grand Livina and an adventure-ready Livina X-Gear. The 6 models in the range are kitted to 3 different specification levels though all fitted with the same 1.6L petrol powertrain, which not only delivers 80kW of power but is also surprisingly light on fuel.
Design, space and functional features
The Livina isn’t trying to sell you something it isn’t. Its design screams practical family car and that’s exactly what you get. The 5-seater standard and X-Gear Livina models offer ample shoulder, head and legroom to ensure passenger comfort while 60/40 split rear seats make it possible to create more room for bigger cargo requirements. Setting it apart from the standard Livina, the Livina X-Gear boasts additional off-road style cues while the Grand Livina offers more space. This in itself makes the Grand Livina a great buy for young, expanding families. With seating for 7 with a third row of double seats that can be folded flat for increased storage space, there’s enough room for babies, baby seats, strollers, the family dog and maybe even the in-laws.
A safe drive with lots of added extras
The Livina’s electronic power steering, good quality suspension and high rigidity allow you to enjoy great handling, stability and control in varying conditions. At the same time its host of model dependent safety features including airbags, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist let you drive with confidence and peace of mind. You’ll also find alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric windows and a full-feature audio system on selected models. That’s pretty much everything you could want from a family traveller, I’d say.
