The new Nissan Micra is a finalist in Car Of The Year and it is easy to see why.

The new Nissan Micra 5 is the smallest new-model Nissan in SA, but it is neither small nor entry-level. It boasts bold new looks and more space and power than its predecessor. And it’s loaded with features.

What is it? The Nissan Micra 5 is a 5-door hatchback with “hidden” rear doors like the Juke. It is superbly-styled, combining sensuous curves with bold angles to deliver an aggressive stance, a look that’s ready to rock! Previous Micras were undeniably city cars, cute and rounded. The 5 has shed the city tag to become a premium car.

It comes in seven trim levels and there are two engines in the range. The first is a 0.9L Turbo giving 66kW power and 140Nm torque. The second engine nudges towards the hot-hatch territory. This is a 1.0L Turbo giving 84kW and 180Nm. Either is a lot of engine for a car that size. It comes with 15”, 16” or 17” wheels, depending on the model.

Speaking of size, the new Micra is roomy inside. It easily and comfortably seats five, with plenty of headroom and legroom in the back. The 300L boot can extend to 1004L when the 60/40 split back seats are folded down.

With all Nissans, safety is paramount. The Micra 5 has six airbags, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, vehicle dynamic control, hill start assist, intelligent ride and trace controls, remote central door locking, immobiliser, cruise control and auto headlights with auto hazard.

Features get progressively more comprehensive as you move up the range. They start with an adjustable steering wheel, audio system with AM/FM, Mp3, Aux, RDS, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, two speakers, aircon and a multi-functional steering wheel.

The next model adds a 7” display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with 4 speakers. Then as you go, you get Intelligent Around View Monitor, Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot Warning, rear parking sensors and keyless entry. Next on the menu are LED headlamps and fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, a stunning Bose sound system with six speakers and an automatic aircon. The final model gives you leather seats, heated in front.

You get a 6-year/150 000km warranty, 3-year/90 000km service plan and roadside assistance for as long as you have the car. You can get a Nissan Micra 5 from as little as R243 900*, but please have a look at the full range or book a test drive of the new Nissan Micra 5.
