Looking for a B-segment hatchback with some oomph? Have a look at the Nissan Micra with 1-litre turbo mill. That would be the Acenta Plus, Tekna and Tekna Plus models with the lowered sports suspension.
At 84kW power and 180Nm torque going to 200Nm on over-boost, these models have significantly more grunt than their 0.9-litre 66kW brethren. You have to decide if you want hot or not.
The Micra 5 is a significant step up from its predecessor. The old Mica was a cute city car, the new one is a more snarly beast. It was designed for European tastes, so it is 174mm longer, 78mm wider and 55mm lower. It is noticeably more stylish and much better equipped, with much borrowed from the bigger Qashqai.
The top-range Tekna Plus comes with lots of airbags, ABS, brake assist, EBD, dynamic control, hill start assist and the rest of the safety features you would want. A 7” display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Around View Monitor, moving object detection, blind-spot warning, parking sensors and the stunning Bose sound system. This has six speakers, of which two are in the driver’s headrest. Boom!
Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, with an automatic seemingly in the pipeline as well. The Micra is easy in city driving and really chucks on the freeway with its sixth gear. The handling is crisp and sporty, the ride tight and controlled. The steering is light, just asking for corners. The sporty suspension handles tight corners and bumps at speed with absolute ease.
The gear lever takes a bit getting used to. Initially, it feels too high until you realise it keeps your left hand close to the steering wheel.
Overall, the turbo Micra competes with the best in its class. Its handling is very good and it has plenty of power. Externally it is a handsome car with an aggressive stance. Inside it exudes quality and give you all the features and then some.
0 – 100km takes 9.9 seconds and the top speed is 195 km/h. Normal driving will give you 5-litres/100km. You get a six-year/150 000km warranty and three-year/90 000km service plan.
