This year marks the Grand Canyon’s 100th year anniversary as a national park and there is another reason to celebrate. Nissan has announced that they are donating an Ultimate Parks TITAN, a specially-built support vehicle to the Grand Canyon Conservancy.
The main purpose of Ultimate Parks TITAN is to assist the Canyon Field School, a partnership between Grand Canyon Conservancy and the National Park Service. It offers unique opportunities for youth to experience the great outdoors across the Grand Canyon National Park. The Calling All TITANS campaign will work alongside the Arizona Conservation Corps to repair trails and park infrastructure.
Tiago Castro, director, Light Commercial Vehicles for Nissan North America, Inc said, “Nissan is proud to support the outstanding work being performed, trail-by-trail, campsite-by-campsite, by partners like the National Park Foundation, Grand Canyon Conservancy and Arizona Conservation Corps. This custom-built TITAN XD 4×4 and trailer should help make their important work in remote areas of the park a little easier, safer and hopefully even a little more comfortable.”
Nissan TITAN Helping Non-Profits
The Nissan Ultimate Parks TITAN is the last TITAN donated to national non-profit partners as part of the campaign. Others include the Ultimate Service TITAN for the American Red Cross and the Ultimate Work TITAN created for Habitat for Humanity.
In a similar fashion to the previous builds, the Ultimate Parks TITAN started with a clear understanding of the specific tasks at hand. The Grand Canyon National Park is known for hard-to-reach areas often only accessible by pack mules. As a result, exceptional traction and effective load carrying capabilities were the top priorities.
Building The Ultimate Parks TITAN
The Ultimate Parks TITAN is based on a 2019 Nissan TITAN XD Gas PRO-4X Crew Cab. It is designed to comfortably and safely carry five people and loads of park equipment into remote areas of the Grand Canyon National Park.
Powered by Nissan’s 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 engine, the Ultimate Parks TITAN has a whopping 390 horsepower and 534 Nm of torque. An advanced four-wheel drive system provides all-terrain traction thanks to a transfer case designed to ensure maximum power distribution in every gear. Like all TITAN XD PRO-4X vehicles, the Ultimate Parks TITAN also has an advanced electronic locking rear differential that further helps boost traction.
Considering the tough job at hand, the Nissan TITAN has durable off-road performance features including Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Brake Limited-Slip Differential (BLSD). An ICON 3-inch suspension lift kit and Hellwig Air Suspension provides much needed extra clearance for taking on rocks, boulders or other obstacles. The Ultimate Parks TITAN features new, high-traction 35-inch Nitto Trail Grappler tyres on Method 701 Trail Series wheels.
The Ultimate Support Vehicle
Adding to the already rugged design, the TITAN XD’s heavy-duty fully boxed steel frame has been extended to fit the customised body. Behind the roomy cabin interior, you will find locking compartments, storage bins, equipment racks and tie-downs, including a Rhino-Rack Pioneer Tray and EGR fender flares.
Taking on remote areas also requires more fuel and the extended frame perfectly accommodates a 208-liter fuel tank. But that’s not all as it also has a RotopaX fuel cell since there are very few opportunities to refuel once deep inside the park.
As Will Shafroth, president of the National Park Foundation said, “The Ultimate Parks TITAN is a physical manifestation of the support Nissan is providing to parks and park champions coast to coast. From the Grand Canyon to the Great Smokies, to Glacier Bay in Alaska, Nissan’s support bolsters the critical work of local partners connecting youth to parks and service corps helping to restore these treasured places.”
Nissan TITAN Payload And Black Series Camper
The service bed is home to a variety of special repair tools and equipment, including a Miller EnPak welder, air compressor and generator. Completing the ultimate off-road package is a WARN Industries ZEON Platinum 12-S Winch to help the vehicle out of tight spots or locations with low traction. The custom Baja Designs worksite lighting adds another dimension as does the Addictive Desert Designs HoneyBadger front bumper.
Nissan truly proves its ability with a maximum payload rating of 1 356 kg and a towing capacity of 5 300 kg. This means it can easily tow a trailer filled with equipment and supplies over any sort of terrain. In addition to the impressive payload of the Nissan TITAN, the Black Series Camper off-road trailer provides even more cargo space. The specially outfitted trailer also has numerous helpful features like a CargoGlide bedslide, Leitner Designs bed rack, Rhino-Rack Batwing awning and CVT hard shell tent.
The Nissan TITAN XD also features several towing aids including an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system. This makes it possible for one person to hook the trailer to the car, check indicators, brake lights and running lights from inside the cab or with the key fob.
Tiago Castro added that “The Ultimate Parks TITAN is as impressive a vehicle as the work provided by the Grand Canyon Conservancy in one of the most amazing national parks in the country. We can’t wait for it to be put to work by the exceptional men and women improving our national parks every day.”
