Nissan NV200 First Drive Review

Nissan NV200 LCV

Say hello to the commerical vehicle of tomorrow that is available in South Africa today. Say hello to the Nissan NV200

The Nissan NV200 commercial van is most certainly not the first vehicle you would think of when buying a new car, but chances are South African’s will be driving in one soon.

Although new to the South African market, the NV200 has been on sale in over 40 countries for some time now. In fact, this compact van has been chosen as the “Taxi of Tomorrow” for the Big Apple, old New York itself. No mean feat for any vehicle manufacturer.

Function over form makes for a great commercial vehicle

Although commercial vehicles are hardly ever designed to look pretty, the NV200 is by no means the ugly kid on the block. But it is in it’s loading capacity that it truly excels! The NV200 has 40/60 split-opening rear doors that are able to open to both both 90- and 180-degree positions. It also has left and right sliding doors, which makes curbside unloading both easier, and safer. The doors are also very sturdy as well, being made out of solid metal. However, you do have the option to add glass windows at a small extra cost.

It’s all about the workspace

Nissan is one of the few international vehicle manufacturers that is forward thinking enough to realise that their commercial vehicles are often used as satellite offices. They have therefore designed the NV200 to accommodate this thinking.

The dashboard is simple yet functional and made of hard plastic. The buttons and interior knobs are simple to use, even when wearing gloves. The front passenger seat can even be folded down to create a worktop space, or simply to increase cargo capacity when necessary.

There is also a recessed storage area on the upper instrument panel which can be used to hold folders, documents and delivery notes. This we feel is a nice touch and further proof that Nissan cares about its commercial fleet customers comfort and not just functionality.

The Conclusion…

With both a 1.6 petrol and 1.5 diesel powertrain available, the Nissan NV200 is powerful enough to carry any load that it needs to, while still being zippy enough for urban driving. This, along with the functionality of the vehicle design ensures that this is the perfect commercial vehicle for any occasion. Plus, as an added bonus it is also available in the NV200 Combi version for those who need a reliable people and not just cargo carrier.
