Nissan has finally unveiled the long-awaited next generation of its flagship Patrol, showcasing a blend of heritage and cutting-edge innovation. Revealed on September 4, 2024, this latest iteration of the beloved SUV sets a new benchmark in the large SUV segment, boasting more advanced underpinnings, a new design, and powerful V6 engines.
The headline act of the new Patrol is undoubtedly its powertrain. Nissan has bid farewell to the 5.6-litre V8, replacing it with a formidable 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine. This new powerplant, closely related to the engines in the Nissan GT-R and Nissan Z, produces an impressive 317kW of power and a massive 700 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful vehicle Nissan has ever produced in terms of torque.
The Y63’s Chief Product Specialist Antonio Lopez proudly stated, “It’s the same family. The GT-R engine is the grandfather, this one is the child, and a brother or a sister to the new Z. It’s the most powerful engine we have ever made.”
The new engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, feeding power to all four wheels. Importantly, Nissan claims this new powertrain is 24 percent more fuel-efficient than its predecessor.
Dimensions And Capability
The Y63 Patrol rides on a new platform, resulting in increased dimensions. It now measures 5,205mm in length (+35mm), and 2,030mm in width (+35mm), while maintaining its height at 1955mm. The third row has been significantly improved, with the rear section and boot now 30 percent wider than in the Y62.
Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the new Intelligent Dynamic Suspension system, which includes air suspension that can provide an additional 7cm of lift, improving approach and departure angles.
Technology And Interior
The Y63 Patrol’s interior represents a quantum leap in technology. Twin screens stretching 28.6 inches across the dash (two 14.3-inch screens) provide a digital dash and multimedia interface. Additional screens are available for rear passengers, and the driver has a 7.0-inch head-up display.
The SUV comes equipped with Google Built In for mapping and connectivity, over-the-air updates, and a Nissan app that allows remote control of certain functions. An innovative feature is the infrared sensors that measure passengers’ skin temperature to adjust climate control airflow accordingly.
Distinctive Design
Exterior-wise, the Y63 Patrol features C-shaped headlights framing a new 3D-style grille. The side profile showcases a distinctive upward kick at the D-pillar, meeting a new ‘floating’ style roof. The rear layout echoes the front with a full-width light bar and squared-off tailgate.
Ken Lee, Nissan’s Senior Design Director, emphasised the Patrol’s bold character: “The owners of Patrol are even more passionate than we are. This is tough, strong, bold, and it symbolises it can conquer any terrain.”
Global Release
The new Patrol is set to go on sale in the Middle East Region in November 2024. However, customers in other markets will have to wait longer:
Nissan South Africa has confirmed that the Patrol is earmarked for introduction, but only toward the middle of 2026. The local arm stated, “The all-new Nissan Patrol is under evaluation to be launched in South Africa FY26, in the second half.”
The 2025 Nissan Patrol Y63 represents a significant leap forward for the iconic nameplate. With its powerful new engine, advanced technology, and enhanced capabilities, it’s clear that Nissan is positioning the Patrol to compete against rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser 300.
As the world eagerly awaits the global rollout of the new Patrol, it remains to be seen how this blend of power, luxury, and capability will perform in various markets around the world.
