2022 Nissan Qashqai

It’s here. Okay, not yet, but it will be. Soonish. Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts and hold onto your hats. The much anticipated, long-awaited Nissan Qashqai third generation is nearly here. Why the razzmatazz? Because the Qashqai was the first compact SUV/crossover ever when it was launched 14 years ago, and the current Nissan Qashqai is still a major force in the fierce fight for market share in this segment. By all accounts, the next one will be a zinger.

The exact specs of what we are about to receive are still unclear, but whatever we get, it will be a game-changer. The first Q looked like a higher, chunkier station wagon, i.e. the crossover then. The current model Nissan Qashqai looks more like the current X-Trail, perhaps one that has gone to a better school. Same all-around, go-anywhere, take-everything look, but more refined.

The new one is different. For starters, it has a slightly longer wheelbase, which gives it a more purposeful look. And in car design, a couple of centimetres will go a long way to more legroom or luggage space. The new Qashqai is bigger, better looking and has a lot more tech.

Tech

We’ll see what we get, but the big news for the European Qashqai is the mild hybrid engine. The 1.3 turbo petrol engine is backed up with a small Lithium-ion battery which will give better idle-stop, quicker restart and an extra 6Nm torque for up to 20 seconds.

It comes with a 103kW engine coupled with a six-speed box, or a 116kW mill with the Xtronic box, operated via a gear selector in the middle or paddles behind the wheel.

People get really excited about giant infotainment screens, and the new Qashqai has two – one in the middle and one for the driver. But the big news is that you can go full Top Gun with the new Q. A 27.4cm Head-Up Display will give you speed, directions, road conditions and more, without you having to take your eyes off the road.

Really cool headlights

You know when you’re driving at night and a car approaches from the front and you dim your lights and you can suddenly not see where you are going? We hate that too. The new Qashqai comes with LED matrix headlights that, when a car approaches, change the shape of the beam to not blind the oncoming driver, but still, show you everything you need to see.

We know what the new model will look like, and it is a looker. We don’t yet know which engines and other features we will get or the price. If you are eager to be the first to know about the new Nissan Qashqai, please .
