There are two variants of the NP200 bakkie sold in South Africa: the 1.6 8V Base petrol variant and the 1.6 8V Base A/C with Safety Pack petrol variant.

Although every NP200 variant in the range is a reliable pickup that handles like a car yet performs the tasks of a light commercial vehicle, we would recommend opting for the top model 1.6 8V Base A/C with Safety Pack. Reason being that it comes standard with some great features not available on the base model, including: air-conditioning and a safety pack.

The top of the NP200 previously sold in South Africa is the Nissan NP200 1.6 16V High Spec Petrol variant. It comes packed with convenience and safety features such as driver and passenger airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), height adjustable front seatbelts, height adjustable headrests, remote central locking, a roll bar, front power windows, opening rear sliding window, vanity mirror on the passenger sun visor, AM/FM radio and CD/MP3 player with integrated display and two speakers.

No, the entire NP200 range comes standard with a conventional 5-speed manual transmission.

Standard features across the range include ventilated disc front brakes, rear drum brakes, a collapsible safety steering column, an anti-theft electronic encoded safety system that is activated by transponder and the Nissan DataDot anti-theft identification system. Trim level and model variant specific safety features include driver and/or passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, remote central locking and a roll bar.

The NP200 is the direct evolution of the legendary Nissan half-ton Bakkie that was so popular in South Africa in the 1980’s and 1990’s! This same level of reliability and economical running costs is hardwired into the very DNA of the NP200 design. This makes it an amazing personal vehicle as well as an exceptional fleet vehicle, as it is to this day one of the best and most reliable pickups in its coupé utility class. In fact, we are so confident in the reliability of this outstanding vehicle that it has a 15,000km service interval, has an optional service plan, comes standard with a 6 year/150 000 km Warranty, and even has an additional 6 year/150 000 km Anti-corrosion Warranty.

The NP200 is available only in the 1.6-litre 8V petrol driven engine. A 16V derivative was previously sold in South Africa, but is no longer available as a new model.

A more detailed look at the impressive engine specifications of the NP200 can be found in our latest brochure, but at a glance the 1.6 8V petrol engine puts out 64kW of power at 5500rpm and the 1.6 16V petrol engine put out 77kW of power at 5750rpm. The torque of the 1.6 8V and the 1.6 16V petrol engines are 128Nm at 3000rpm and 148Nm at 3750rpm respectively.

The NP200 might be an entry level LCV, but it has more than enough power to ensure that it gets the job done. It is a worthy successor to the Nissan Champ and as such has been equipped with a 1.6L 8V petrol engine that puts out 64 kW of power. The (discontinued) 1.6L 16V petrol engine produced 77 kW of power.

Not all oils are created equal, yet they are an important and often overlooked part of the engine. For this reason we suggest using Castrol MAGNATEC. This oil was voted as the favourite motor lubricant of South African consumers for 2018 in one of South Africa’s largest independent consumer-voted programs.

Depending on the trim level and model variant, the following Nissan NP200 Tyres comes as standard with all New Models purchased: 15” Steel (bowl type), 15” Steel and 15” Alloy.

The ideal tyre pressure for your NP200 would be around 2.2 bar for both the front and rear tyres. Most service stations and tyre specialist in South Africa would recommend the same for almost all vehicles of this type.

The NP200 has an 800kg payload which can be carried in its spacious rubberised loadbox with a floor length of 1807 mm, a width of 1374 mm and a height of 535 mm. Its load volume is 1250 litres across the range!

Please note that the NP200 is classifies as an LCV, and as such the 0 – 100 km/h acceleration figures have not been tested and released by Nissan.

When purchasing a New Nissan NP200 the mileage should always be low. However there will be a few kilometres on the clock put there during the delivery process. These however will be minimal! The current range of NP200 pickups uses an engine designed and manufactured by the Nissan-Renault Alliance but it remains essentially a Nissan engine. Interestingly, however some older models (including those which could be found on our used Nissan NP200 bakkies page) were available with a 1.5-litre 65kW 200Nm small-capacity diesel engine which was sourced from Renault.

The NP200 has a payload capacity of 800 kgs in all model variants.

The NP200 has a maximum towing capacity of 650 kilograms. Please note however that it has a maximum unbraked towing capacity of 580kg!
