The History of Nissan Safety
Safety first is not just a statement, it is words that Nissan lives by in everything it does! The History of Nissan Safety is a long and storied one and has seen Nissan create and champion many new and innovative safety features over the years. To give you more insight into this we have included a detailed look at the future, current and past safety options which have now become standard in many of the vehicles we manufacture.
Next Generation Safety Features TODAY!
Nissan uses its holistic approach to vehicle safety to guide all of its engineering and manufacturing decisions but here in South Africa and abroad. This is because Nissan cares about the safety of its drivers and their passengers and thanks to their Nissan Safety Shield® are continuously striving to create a “No Traffic Accident” society.
This Nissan Safety Shield® offers next-generation safety features to today’s Nissan Owners, with some of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility features offering:
Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
A game-changing and life-saving safety feature which provides both audio and visual alerts, and automatically applies the brakes, to help mitigate or even in some cases completely avoid vehicle collisions.
Rear Automatic Braking
Not only does this automotive safety system alert the driver to potential hazards when reversing, but it will even automatically apply the brakes if they fail to stop. This will at worst lessen the severity of any impact, but in many instances will avert a rear collision completely.
Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
Pulling out into traffic has never been safer thanks to Nissan’s Rear Cross-Traffic Alert! It will let you know when cars are approaching from the rear even when they are sometimes* out of sight.
Blind Spot Warning**
A safety system which will help to see in areas where you physically cannot! When it detects something it will let you know using a chime sound and you can make your lane change safely.
Lane Departure Warning***
If you ever unintentionally drift out of your lane then this Nissan Intelligent Mobility feature will alert you to the unexpected lane change.
High Beam Assist
Your vehicle will now sense oncoming traffic when your lights are on and turn down your high beams accordingly.
What is Nissan Intelligent Mobility?
Nissan is using its Intelligent Mobility technology to revolutionize driving as we know it by creating a car that can think, learn, communicate and predict to partner with you on the road. These ever-evolving features will help to ensure safer driving, better vehicle control and will ultimately connect your and your vehicle to the world around you.
Please note that not all intelligent mobility features are available in South Africa. Please chat to one of our Group 1 Nissan Sales team regarding which Intelligent Mobility Features are available (if any) in the vehicle you are interested in.

Nissan Pioneered Advanced Vehicle Safety
Nissan has a well-deserved reputation as a leader in vehicle safety technologies and has introduced and pioneered all of the following Safety features over the years and helped to make their mark on the History of Vehicle Safety:
Nissan Advanced Airbag System
Since 1994 Nissan has provided as standard Airbags in many of its vehicles. Then in 1995, it started to include dual airbags for front seats as standard. Since then Nissan has gone on to develop one of the most comprehensive airbag systems in the world, the Nissan Advanced Airbag System.
Zone Body Construction
While the internal cabin safety features help to protect the driver and passengers, Nissan has helped to create an impact-absorbing Zone Body Construction. Decades of research has gone into perfecting this safety system and today Nissan is at the forefront of this safety in vehicle design ethos.
Tyre Pressure Monitors
Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems were developed by Nissan and a number of other vehicle manufacturers to help ensure that correct tyre pressure is always maintained. This leads to safer and more comfortable driving!
Anti-lock Braking System
ABS helps prevent wheel lockup and allows for better vehicle control in emergencies. Nissan helped to introduce this as a standard feature in many of its vehicles when this technology was first developed.
Vehicle Dynamic Control
Improved steering and braking in even the slippiest of conditions is now standard in many Nisan vehicles thanks to Nissan’s belief in this technology when it was first introduced and ongoing dedication to improving how it works.
Snug Kids® Safety
Nissan has helped create one of the safest driving environments for children with its Snug Kids® System which uses a Lower Anchors and Tethers System (LATCH) to ensure that compatible child restraint systems improve the chances of child safety in the event of an accident.
*Not all vehicles are detectable, please refer to your vehicles Owners Manual for more information.
**Blind Spot Detection cannot assist with the prevention of all accidents and it does not completely eliminate all blind spots.
***Lane Departure Warning only operates where lane markings can be detected.
