Safety first is not just a statement; it is words that Nissan lives by in everything it does! The history of Nissan safety is a long and storied one and has seen Nissan create and champion many new and innovative safety features over the years. To give you more insight into this, we have included a detailed look at the future, current, and past Nissan safety features which have now become standard in many of the vehicles we manufacture.
Next Generation Safety Features TODAY!
Nissan uses its holistic approach to vehicle safety to guide all of its engineering and manufacturing decisions both here in South Africa and abroad. This is because Nissan cares about the safety of its drivers and their passengers and, thanks to the Nissan Safety Shield®, is continuously striving to create a “No Traffic Accident” society.
This Nissan Safety Shield® offers next-generation safety features to today’s Nissan owners, with some of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility features offering:
Automatic Emergency Braking With Pedestrian Detection
A game-changing and life-saving Nissan safety feature which provides both audio and visual alerts, and automatically applies the brakes to help mitigate or even in some cases completely avoid vehicle collisions. This system works by continuously monitoring the road ahead using advanced sensors and cameras to detect potential hazards. Whether it’s a sudden stop by the car in front or an unexpected pedestrian crossing, this feature acts faster than human reaction to prevent accidents.
Rear Automatic Braking
Not only does this automotive safety system alert the driver to potential hazards when reversing, but it will even automatically apply the brakes if they fail to stop. This will at worst lessen the severity of any impact, but in many instances will avert a rear collision completely. It is especially helpful in tight parking spaces or driveways where obstacles like poles or low objects might not be immediately visible. By reducing the chances of costly repairs and improving overall safety, this Nissan safety feature offers peace of mind to drivers.
Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
Pulling out into traffic has never been safer thanks to Nissan’s Rear Cross-Traffic Alert! It will let you know when cars are approaching from the rear, even when they are sometimes* out of sight. The system uses radar to monitor the area behind your vehicle, alerting you to vehicles crossing your path from either side. This is particularly useful in busy parking lots or residential areas, where visibility can be limited, ensuring safer navigation in reverse.
Blind Spot Warning**
A safety system that helps you see in areas where you physically cannot! When it detects something, it will let you know using a chime sound so you can make your lane change safely. The system enhances driver awareness by identifying vehicles that may be overtaking or approaching quickly from the blind spot zone. This added layer of protection ensures you stay alert, minimising the risk of lane-change collisions.
Lane Departure Warning***
If you ever unintentionally drift out of your lane, this Nissan Intelligent Mobility feature will alert you to the unexpected lane change. Designed to keep drivers focused, it uses advanced sensors to detect lane markings and provides audible and visual cues if the vehicle strays. This feature is especially helpful on long drives or during moments of fatigue, helping drivers stay safe and centred on the road.
High Beam Assist
Your vehicle will now sense oncoming traffic when your lights are on and turn down your high beams accordingly. It improves nighttime visibility for drivers without causing glare to other road users, creating a safer driving environment for everyone. By automatically switching back to high beams once the road clears, this feature ensures optimal lighting without requiring manual adjustments.
Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB)
IEB monitors the road ahead and applies brakes to prevent or mitigate collisions. Using advanced sensors and cameras, it can detect vehicles or obstacles in your path and react faster than human reflexes. This feature not only reduces the severity of accidents but also boosts driver confidence in unpredictable traffic situations.
Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention (I-BSI)
Alerts drivers to vehicles in blind spots and assists in steering back into the lane if necessary. By continuously monitoring areas that are difficult to see, this system provides critical alerts when vehicles approach from the side. With subtle corrective steering, it actively helps prevent dangerous lane-change accidents, ensuring smoother and safer driving.
Lane Departure Warning and Intelligent Lane Intervention
Warns when the vehicle drifts out of its lane and can guide it back. This safety feature in Nissan cars uses cameras to track lane markings and provides timely alerts when unintentional drifting occurs. If necessary, the system can gently adjust the vehicle’s steering to ensure you stay safely centred, reducing the risk of collisions caused by distractions or fatigue.
Rear Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
Detects obstacles or pedestrians behind the vehicle and applies brakes if necessary. This advanced Nissan safety feature is particularly useful in crowded urban areas or parking lots, where visibility can be limited. By responding quickly to unexpected obstacles, it protects both drivers and pedestrians from potential harm.
ProPILOT Semi-Autonomous Driving
Maintain speed, distance, and lane positioning effortlessly with Nissan’s advanced driver assistance system. ProPILOT reduces the stress of highway driving by seamlessly managing acceleration, braking, and steering in specific conditions. It’s an ideal companion for long trips or heavy traffic, making every journey smoother and more relaxed.

What Is Nissan Intelligent Mobility?
Nissan is using its Intelligent Mobility technology to revolutionise driving as we know it by creating a car that can think, learn, communicate, and predict to partner with you on the road. These ever-evolving features will help to ensure safer driving, and better vehicle control, and ultimately connect you and your vehicle to the world around you.
Some of the standout Intelligent Mobility features include:
Intelligent Around View® Monitor With Moving Object Detection
Provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle to assist with parking and low-speed manoeuvres. This system uses multiple cameras to create a bird’s-eye view, allowing drivers to navigate tight spaces with ease. Additionally, it detects moving objects in the vicinity, providing visual and audible alerts to prevent potential accidents.
Driver Attention Alert
Monitors steering patterns and suggests breaks if signs of drowsiness or inattention are detected. Analysing subtle changes in driving behaviour, it recognises when the driver may need a rest. This feature acts as a Nissan early warning system, helping to reduce accidents caused by fatigue or lack of focus.
Traffic Sign Recognition
Identifies traffic signs and displays them to the driver, keeping you informed of speed limits and other important information. Using forward-facing cameras, it detects road signs and relays real-time updates on the vehicle’s dashboard. This ensures that drivers remain aware of changing road conditions, enhancing safety and compliance.
Intelligent Forward Collision Warning
Monitors two vehicles ahead to anticipate and warn of potential collisions. By tracking traffic patterns and braking behaviour, it provides advanced warnings that allow the driver to react promptly. This feature adds an extra layer of safety, reducing the likelihood of chain-reaction accidents in congested traffic.
Intelligent Ride Control And Intelligent Trace Control
Enhances ride comfort and cornering stability by adjusting engine torque and applying precise braking to individual wheels, and ensures optimal handling in various driving conditions. These systems work together to provide a smoother ride and improved driver confidence, even on winding or uneven roads.
