Nissan Starts to Roll Out Trailblazing Safety Tech on Top Models

Nissan Safety Shield 360

If you’ve been on the look-out for the next big thing in vehicle safety tech, look no further. Nissan is getting ready to roll out a trailblazing new suite of safety technologies on some of its top models the world over. While it will still be awhile before we get to enjoy the benefits thereof on the likes of the Nissan X-Trail in South Africa, we have a keen interest in the rollout and how it stands to benefit drivers and passengers around the globe.

What is Safety Shield 360?

Safety Shield 360 is a combination of six cutting-edge safety and driver-assist technologies that work in conjunction to improve driver safety and overall driving experience. It will be standard on all of Nissan’s top-selling models by 2021 (i.e. 1 million+ vehicles each year).

The technologies that form part of the Safety Shield 360 system include:

  1. Automatic emergency braking This system uses radar and cameras to track the movement of vehicles and pedestrians around the car, giving warnings and applying braking to reduce collisions.
  2. Land departure. This warning system lets the driver know when they are moving from their lane.
  3. Bright/dim assist. When driving at night, this system will dim your headlights when another vehicle approaches, and switch back to bright once they’ve passed.
  4. Blind spot assistance. Never worry about cars in your blind spot again – this system has you covered.
  5. Reverse traffic alert. When reversing out of a parking spot, this system detects any approaching vehicles and informs you by means of haptic and visual warnings.
  6. Automatic rear braking. This system was engineered to detect stationary objects at the rear of the car when reversing and will apply brakes automatically to avoid a potential collision.

How will it change the way we drive?

This revolutionary new safety suite will give drivers the ability to avoid needless collisions by informing them of potential hazards right around the vehicle. With this tech in place, Nissan owners will be able to take to the road with confidence, enjoying their drive safe in the knowledge that they will be able to react timeously to unforeseen eventualities.
