We’ve spoken about the Nissan Leaf helping the amazing country of Bhutan before where instead of having a GDP they have a GNH: Gross National Happiness.
Part of their GNH program is the move towards becoming a zero emissions nation and they see the Nissan Leaf as the perfect vehicle to replace their current car industry. While Bhutan produces a huge amount of clean energy from its hydroelectric projects, they export the majority of this and import fuels for their motor industry. Bhutan is hoping that by partnering with Nissan they can cut their imports of the fossil fuels needed for their vehicles and instead replace them with clean green energy cars.
Recently, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced a partnership that would see commitment from both sides to electrify the country’s fleet and roll out charging stations for the Nissan Leaf across the country.
At the press conference, Tobgay said that, “We will commit to a program to achieve zero emissions as a nation by a certain target date. We cannot go on this journey ourselves. We need the world to travel with us, and what better partner than to have the Nissan LEAF help us along this journey.”
The Nissan Leaf is available in South Africa.
