Oxford University has been testing a driverless version of the popular EV, the Nissan LEAF, incorporating technology controlled from an Apple iPad mounted on the vehicle’s dashboard.

Nissan LEAF sales might just make it to 50 000 units by the end of this year. Currently 42 700 LEAF models have been sold around the world with 19 000 having left showrooms in Japan. Even the U.S. saw a 76% jump in sales from the previous year last month, selling 1579 units during October.
The Japanese automaker is making every effort to broaden sales of its full-electric, zero-emissions vehicle around the world and it seems to be paying off. Last month Nissan revealed its first global ad campaign begging the question, “What if you could drive the future today?” During the 60 second ad it does not just punt the LEAF’s no pollution and no fuel angles, but also promotes features such as turning on the car’s A/C and heat remotely with a smartphone as well as using the LEAF as an emergency back-up power supply for homes.

Nissan LEAF sets record in reverse

Nissan’s done it again, setting another unique Guinness World Record. Last year at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed a Nissan Juke was driven up the event’s famous hill climb on two wheels. This year at the 2012 Festival, it was the Nissan LEAF that stunned the crowds by completing the same course in record time in reverse.
On both occasions the man behind the wheel was veteran stunt driver, Terry Grant. After setting a new record for the fastest car in reverse over a distance of one mile (or 1.6km) on the Friday, he went on to smash it twice on the Saturday and Sunday. His final time? 1 minute 37.02 seconds at an average speed of 88km/h (55mph).
Terry had the following to say about the experience, “With direct drive from the electric motor to its wheels, the Nissan Leaf can, in theory, go as fast backwards as it can forwards. There were times I wasn’t sure I was coming or going. However, thanks to the Leaf’s low centre of gravity – the batteries are an integral part of the car’s floor – the car is extremely stable, no matter which direction it’s travelling.” He jokingly added, “The only complaint I have is slight neck ache from constantly looking over my shoulder…”
The record attempt was part of Nissan’s social media-driven campaign, ‘The Big Turn On’ which aims to educate the European public regarding the eco-friendly, safety, economical and practical benefits of the EV.
Nissan LEAF’s The Big Turn On pledges reach 1 million

Earlier this year Nissan launched a 100 day campaign, The Big Turn On, to demonstrate the benefits of electric vehicles to the European public with the help of owners, celebrities and online influencers. The influencers have been competing to see who can turn the most people in their respective cities on to electric driving. The top influencer per city will win a Nissan LEAF while the most turned on city will receive 30 Nissan-designed Quick Chargers.
Nissan’s plan was to reach a million people in 100 days in France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, but hit the target 15 days ahead of schedule already. “We are delighted to have hit one million ‘turn ons’ ahead of schedule. It shows that more and more people are realising that cars like Nissan LEAF are a real alternative. While Nissan might have reached its target early, The Big Turn On will continue to spread the word about the 100% electric LEAF,” commented Nissan Europe’s Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Paul Willcox.

Hard to believe, but Nissan’s popular little EV, the LEAF is already celebrating one year on the road and more than 20,000 units sold overseas. Nissan translates that into a staggering 32 million miles travelled without using fuel while it gets a grateful nod from the environment.
To commemorate the occasion a new television commercial shows various sockets singing ‘happy birthday’ to the LEAF. And it’s easy to see why you’d want to sing along…

The acclaimed Nissan LEAF already carries the European and World Car of the Year 2011 titles and has also been named Japan’s Car of the Year. The announcement came on the first day of the nation’s prestigious Tokyo Motor Show.
According to Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga the award reflects the hard work of the staff and recognizes the importance of increasing global awareness regarding zero emission potential. “I think this is a big challenge for Nissan, to make a zero-emission, mobile society,” he said.
Along with its accolades it’s also sold over 20,000 units since sales began at the end of 2010, making it the most successful EV of all time.
