Nissan’s Aluminum Closed-loop Recycling System
Nissan is leading the way in reducing carbon emissions with the all-new Nissan Rogue. This SUV will be its first car made using the “closed-loop” recycling system for aluminium parts.
Under the Nissan Green Program 2022, Nissan plans on replacing 30% of the raw materials in cars built in 2022 with recycled materials. The only way to achieve this is by using recycled materials and developing biomaterials while performing recycling activities at the supplier level and in-house. This brings us to the new Nissan Rogue SUV which could be the dawn of a new “greener” manufacturing era.
What Is The “Closed-Loop” Recycling System?
Closed-loop recycling focuses on supply chain sustainability where the system is developed to recycle materials used during manufacturing. At the heart of the process, you will find a large pneumatic conveyance system. During the manufacturing process, bonnets and doors are stamped into the right shape where they shred and extract scrap material keeping aluminium grades separate.
It is this separation that ensures Nissan can return ‘high-quality scrap’ to suppliers. Here, they turn the reprocessed aluminium scrap into aluminium alloy sheets and send it back to Nissan for use in future production.
Compared to using parts made with primary alloys from raw materials, the “closed-loop” system helps significantly in reducing carbon emissions. It promotes the use of materials that don’t rely on newly mined resources which results in the reduction of waste from factories.
Building The New Nissan Rogue
Aluminium is highly recyclable which is why so many industries rely on this material, including the automotive sector among many others. By using aluminium on the bonnet and doors of the 2021 Nissan Rogue, the process contributes greatly to reduced vehicle weight while improving fuel efficiency and power performance.
The new Nissan Rogue is undeniably one of the most advanced Nissan SUVs ever built. Fact is, it represents one of the biggest model redesigns in the company’s history as part of their global transformation plan, Nissan NEXT.
The four-year transformation strategy involves focusing on two strategic areas to build on Nissan’s reputation for innovation, quality, customer focus and the company’s ongoing cultural transformation of embracing the future of electric vehicles (EVs).
“Nissan must deliver value for customers around the world. To do this, we must make breakthroughs in the products, technologies and markets where we are competitive. In this new era, Nissan remains people-focused, to deliver technologies for all people and to continue addressing challenges” said Makoto Uchida, CEO.
The new Nissan Rogue is being built in Kyushu, Japan, and Tennessee, U.S.A. To ensure continued success, Nissan has collaborated with Kobe Steel, Ltd., UACJ Corp. in Japan and Arconic Corp. and Novelis Inc. in America.
The Nissan Rogue is not sold in South Africa but the third-gen Nissan X-Trail has completely merged with the Nissan Rogue which makes them almost identical.
