Nissan recently reached a milestone when it sold its 50,000th LEAF, making it the best-selling electric vehicle of all time. Since its launch in December 2010, the 100% zero-emissions, all-electric hatch has been named Japanese, European and even World Car of the Year. Today it is sold in 17 countries across Europe as well as in the States.
Globally, LEAF owners have used their eco-friendly vehicles to travel in excess of 260 million emission-free kilometres – greater than the distance from the earth to the sun. The highest mileage reported by a LEAF owner came from a Japanese customer who has already covered more than 175,000km – far beyond an average vehicle’s annual mileage and a testament to the LEAF’s reliability. It has furthermore achieved a customer satisfaction rating of over 95%, the highest of any Nissan vehicle.
In the last 12 months the quick charging infrastructure has also seen a significant growth, with the number of chargers increasing from 158 to 601. The chargers have the capacity to charge a battery from empty to 80% full in only 30 minutes, and continue to be installed in strategic locations such as car parks, shopping centres and service stations for easy and quick accessibility for the growing number of LEAF owners. To see to volume demand, Nissan will also start U.S. production of the LEAF in Tennessee later this year.
